This War of Mine: The Little Ones is a war survival video game developed and published by 11 bit Studios, the game was inspired by the Siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War.
This War of Mine was originally released for Microsoft Windows however due to the success and critical reception of the game it is now being released on both the next gen consoles, the PS4 and the Xbox One
Unlike most war games which focuses on frontline experience where the gamer is given control of a squad or a soldier This War of Mine focuses on the civilian aspect of war. You take control of a group of civilians who are trying to survive in a war torn city in which they are struggling with the lack of food, medicine and the constant danger from hostile scavengers and snipers.
The game has a unique perspective on a war game and the pace of the game follows along with that with both a day and a night cycle. During the day there are snipers atop other buildings around you which prevents the survivors from leaving their hideout. During this time, you should be taking care of the survivors, crafting and trading with other survivors in the area.
During the night however things become increasingly more dangerous and more exciting as you are tasked with taking one of the civilians on a mission to scavenge through the war area to search unique locations for items that will help them survive the war.
The game is said to play on your conscience as you will have to make life and death decisions for the characters within the game. At the beginning of the game you will start off with either two, three or four survivors whose actions you affect. Each character will have one or two traits which will help and or hinder the player.
Some traits are more useful than others for example Marko is a skilled scavenger so he would be useful for the night time missions and Katia has great bargaining skills which can help when trading items because you get things more cheaply, there are twelve characters in all in the game.
The PS4 and Xbox One editions of the game will have everything that the PC versions had however they will also feature extra content which is the Little Ones part of the game. This version will feature new missions, new campaigns and new characters. In the original game it focused on adults and the difficult decisions that they had to face this version of the game will also show the child’s perspective of the conflict.
The game has an 18 rating and will be released on January 29th, both the Xbox One and PS4 version of the game will cost you €34.99 from Gamestop. The PC version of the game received very favourable reviews consistently making mid 80% scores across the board so let’s hope that the next-gen version of the game follows suit.
