Tallaght man Stephen James Smith is one of this country’s most eminent young poets and his latest work, titled My Ireland, has been earning rave reviews since going viral yesterday.

The lengthy poem was commissioned for this year’s St Patrick’s Festival last August and since then the 34 year old local poet, playwright and performer carried a notebook in which he captured his thoughts and various images before logging them on a Google Doc.

Over the course of 12 minutes, My Ireland unfurls to footage shot by music video maker and documentarian Myles O’Reilly and to music specially recorded by Villagers’ Conor O’Brien and Colm Mac Con Iomaire of The Frames.

Stephen, who is also co-founder of the annual Lingo spoken word festival, has won numerous awards for his poetry and his reputation continues to soar as his audience grows bigger.

His poems have been described as lyrical portraits of the people and places around us, and his aim is to make them a true reflection of his life right now.
