With Minister Katherine Zappone due back in Dublin today to face questions the Government is coming under increasing pressure to explain what exactly it knew and did regarding the smearing of Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe.
Sinn Féin will today table a motion of no confidence in the Government however Fianna Fáil said they will abstain from the motion thereby saving the Government from collapse.
However emerging tensions over the weekend between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael could lead to a break down in their support deal plus Fianna Fail have an 11 point lead in the latest polls.
Fianna Fáil’s Justice Spokesperson Jim O’Callaghan says he mentioned Tusla “three or four times” when he met Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald last Wednesday evening but the Justice Minister claims she was unaware of the file until finding out about it through the media last Thursday.
Minister Zappone is also under huge pressure to explain why she never informed her Cabinet colleagues about the Tusla case, especially with an apology pending for Sgt McCabe and an inquiry being set up.
Ms Zappone says she informed “relevant Government colleagues” about the Tusla error.
However, Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald both deny having any knowledge of the Tusla case before it was reported in the media.
With the last General Election taking place just under a year ago is there any appetite among the electorate for another one so soon?
However if, as it appears, this extremely serious and deeply upsetting issue for Sgt McCabe and his family has been going on for the last few years, and the Government has been trying to sweep it under the carpet, do they deserve to stay in power?
So many questions raised in the past week…
Is the Minister For Justice telling the truth?
Is Minister Zappone telling the truth?
Is Enda Kenny telling the truth?
Has the Government been involved in a massive cover up?
Should the Garda Commissioner Noirin O Sullivan step down pending the outcome of an investigation into the affair?
Has the reputation of An Garda Siochana been damaged?
