What does every nine-year-old boy dream of? Well, being a real superhero, carrying out vital rescue missions and battling dangerous villains is probably high up on the list.
And for Domenic – a schoolboy from Bringelly in Sydney’s south-west, who suffers from life-threatening cystic fibrosis – that actually happened.
New South Wales Police and the children’s charity, Make-A-Wish Australia, joined forces – with the blessing of the Walt Disney Company Australia – to fulfil the little boy’s dreams in Sydney.
After receiving an urgent call for assistance from senior police, here’s how awesome Domenic’s day as Iron Boy was. Honestly, it will make you smile so much (and you might find it hard not to get a little emotional at times too…)
The day started with Domenic being urgently whisked away for his secret mission. He was flown by police helicopter from a suburban Sydney park to a busy Operations Centre at Police Headquarters, Parramatta.
This is Iron Boy and his accomplices behind the scenes.
Then the big transformation soon began…
With Captain Rhodes (Domenic’s brother Joseph – how cute) by his side, Iron Boy was fully mission ready.
Then things got really serious. And Iron Boy got down to business…
With his first mission saving Hope Joy on Clark Island complete, later he even saved the day at the Sydney Opera House.
Here’s our hero defeating baddie Ultron.
New South Wales Police Commissioner, Andrew Scipione, commended Domenic’s courage during a special medal presentation.
“On behalf of a grateful Police Force and indeed the people of Sydney, I would like to thank Domenic for his tremendous efforts today,” Commissioner Scipione said.
“It can’t be easy dealing with an illness like his and we feel privileged to be able to work with Make-A-Wish Australia to ensure his wish to be a famous superhero came true”.
He added: It also allows the Police Force to express its community-mindedness and sensitive side; and I hope we have made Domenic’s day.
“It was also my great honour to present Domenic, or should I say Iron Boy, with a special acknowledgement, a Commissioner’s Award for Gallantry.
“Not only has Domenic battled villains and saved his city, he’s stared down his illness and won the day.”
And people on social media have been overwhelmed by how heartwarming this news story is, posting tweets with the hashtag #IronBoyAU.
But the best tweet of all? Yep, there’s a message from another superhero – Tony Stark himself.
Oh, and he even filmed this for Domenic. It’s so great.
