Review: Captive

A true story of a woman’s night of terror in the hands of a convict

Captive is a story based on the true events of a woman, Ashley (Kate Mara) being held captive by an escaped convict. Ashley is a recovering drug addict who is trying to make amends and fix her life. She has moved into a new apartment in the hopes of regaining custody of her young daughter, who was taken off her by child services.

Meanwhile Brian Nichols (David Oyelowo) escapes from the Fulton County courthouse in Atlanta and kills three people on his way out. Brian goes on the run and after listening in on a police radio to know where they are searching, decides to hide out.

Brian chooses Ashley’s house to hide out in, and holds her hostage for the night against her will. As Brian watches the man hunt get closer to him on the news, Ashley tries to get him to give himself up. Captive is a horrifying true story, but despite the actors best efforts to make you feel the tension, this isn’t exactly a tense movie and I left feeling like it could have been a day time D-list movie.
