Mayor of South Dublin County Council Cllr. Guss O’Connell welcomed councillors and guests to the official opening of the newly upgraded Belgard Walkway between Belgard Road and Belgard Square East last Thursday 1st June.
The vision of the upgrade was to create a more streamlined streetscape between The Square Shopping Centre, Belgard Road and the High Street towards Tallaght Village.
Speaking at the opening Mayor O’Connell said:
“We would like to extend our thanks to the members of the public for their patience during the works period, to the management of The Square for its co-operation, to the staff of McDonalds and personnel at the Garda Station for extending us a similar courtesy.
“The aim of this project is to encourage more pedestrian traffic between the locations, thereby encouraging more footfall for local businesses.”
The benefits of the scheme are:
- The existing pedestrian crossings on both Belgard Sq East and Belgard Road have been upgraded to improve pedestrian safety.
- New public lighting has also been installed as part of the scheme. This will help to improve safety, reduce antisocial behaviour and encourage more footfall between The Square and Tallaght Village in the evenings.
- The landscaping has been significantly reconfigured in order to visually open up the walkway.
The scheme, designed and project managed by the Roads Department has been completed as part of the ongoing Villages Initiative. It was fully resourced by South Dublin County Council and was delivered under budget and on schedule. Contractor for the works was Bretland Ltd.
