New Firhouse School Appoints Principal Ahead of 2018 Opening

Teaching for more than 13 years, Kildare woman Claire Matthews is well prepared for challenges that lie ahead as principal of an emerging secondary school.

Educate Together announced the appointment earlier this month and revealed that Ms Matthews will take up the role of principal at Firhouse Educate Together Secondary School once it opens in September next year.

She said: “I am delighted to have been entrusted with the privilege of leading the development of Firhouse Educate Together Secondary School. I am excited to work with colleagues, students, parents and the community in Firhouse to establish a school that will be innovative and collaborative with the best interests of our students at the forefront of everything we do.

“We will co-create a school culture that will support everybody to flourish and achieve both personally and academically with the focus on meaningful engagement of our students and whole school community.”

Ms Matthews previously taught English, French, CSPE and SPHE at Coláiste Chiaráin in Leixlip for 13 years before going on secondment to the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) in 2012 where she worked primarily in the areas of Literacy, School Self-evaluation, English and Modern Foreign Languages.

Over the last year she has been working as Team Leader for Modern Foreign Languages with Junior Cycle for Teachers (JCT) and has also been lecturing student teachers on the Professional Masters in Education (PME) programme in UCD.

Jennifer Buttner, Regional Development Officer for Educate Together, described the appointment of Ms Matthews as “wonderful news” for the whole school community. She said: “We look forward to working with Claire as this new school grows and flourishes.”

It is expected that there will be between 50 and 80 first year students starting at Firhouse Educate Together Secondary School, which will open in temporary accommodation, in September 2018 and the school will cater for 1,000 students once at full capacity.

The Department of Education and Skills is currently working towards the acquisition of a permanent site for the school.
