“I’m in Tallaght today to meet with Paddy and go and look at some potential units for the new SBG Tallaght gym with him and my builder friend Andrew. One is on the Airton Road and the other is beside the Tallaght LUAS stop, so the gym will be somewhere in the middle of them!
We had such a crazy run up to Conor’s fight and then Paddy’s last weekend so everything was on hold but I have nothing big coming up now until UFC Dublin in October. By the end of August we’ll have our location, it’ll probably take four weeks to kit it out so we’ll be looking to open late September.
Paddy is a local hero and with all the fighters I’ve trained down the years he’s the first I’ve ever asked to open up a gym with because I believe in him, he’s such a great guy and he’s so proud of his home town. He’s got such a rich personality, he’s one of those people that you go away feeling better after talking to him.
I used to get stopped by young lads who wanted to talk about Conor, now it can be older women in their 70’s who want to stop and chat about him!
Things are going great at the moment, there’s been such an outpouring of support from the Irish people towards the lads, they’re crossing all boundaries. I used to get stopped by young lads who wanted to talk about Conor, now it can be older women in their 70’s who want to stop and chat about him!
There’s a huge movement towards MMA in the country at the minute. Things haven’t changed for me, tonight I’ve a class to teach at 8 o’clock and I’m going to take that class. If you look after minute by minute, year by year, takes care of itself.
I’m very excited to be able to bring a first-class facility to the area which will be for everyone; all ages, all body types, all abilities, everyone welcome. To be honest with you I get more pleasure from training a guy in his 40’s who just wants to feel better about himself and lose some weight than training any of the top fighters because they’re incredible athletes with an unbelievable mindset so it’s easy to train them.
I’ve cousins from Tallaght so I know the area well as I grew up coming here every weekend to hang out them.”
