Since the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak was reported in Wuhan, China, the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) have emphasised the need to preserve personal health to avoid infection.
Likewise, we remind you that here you can find out what are the symptoms of the coronavirus and what you can do if you present them.
What to do to protect me from the coronavirus
There are several precautions you can take to reduce your chance of getting or spreading Covid-19 coronavirus:
  • Wash your hands thoroughly and often using an alcohol-based disinfectant or soap and water.
Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based disinfectant kills viruses that may be on your hands.

  • Keep a minimum of one meter away from anyone who coughs or sneezes.
Why? When someone coughs or sneezes, droplets of fluid that may contain the virus are released from the nose or mouth. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets and with them the Covid-19 coronavirus, if the coughing person has the disease.
  • Avoid touching your face: eyes, nose and mouth
Why? Hands feel many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, the hands can transfer the virus to the eyes, nose, or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and cause illness.
  • Label sneeze. Both you and the people around you should make sure to cover your mouth and nose with your elbow bent or with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. The used handkerchief should be discarded immediately.

Why? Viruses spread through droplets. By maintaining good respiratory hygiene, you are protecting people around you from illnesses like the cold, flu, and Covid-19 coronavirus.

  • Stay home if you are not feeling well. If you have a fever, cough, and shortness of breath, seek medical attention and call ahead. Follow the instructions of the local health authorities

Why? Avoiding contact with other people and visits to medical centres will allow them to work more effectively and help protect you and others from possible infections with the Covid-19 coronavirus.

  • If you have symptoms, seek medical attention in time

Why? Whenever you have a fever, cough, and shortness of breath, it is essential to find medical attention immediately, as these symptoms may be due to a respiratory infection or other serious condition. Respiratory symptoms with fever can have a variety of causes, and depending on your travel history and personal circumstances, the 2019-nCoV could be one of them.

Protective measures in areas where the coronavirus is spreading

Given the arrival of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic in Mexico, these are the WHO’s recommendations:

  • Stay home if you start to feel bad, even if it’s mild symptoms like headache, light fever (37.3 degrees Celsius or more) and slight runny nose until you recover.
  • If you find it essential to leave the house or receive a visit (for example, to get food), put on a mask to avoid infecting other people.

Why? Avoiding contact with other people and visits to medical centres will allow them to work more effectively and help protect you and others from possible infections with the Covid-19 coronavirus.

  • If you have a fever, cough, and shortness of breath, seek medical advice quickly, as it could be due to a respiratory infection or other serious condition. Call ahead and inform any health sector institution about a trip you have recently made or any contact you have had with travellers.

When to use mouth covers

If you are healthy, you only need to wear a face mask if you are caring for someone suspected of having a Covid-19 coronavirus infection.

  • Also, use a face mask if you have a cough or sneeze.
  • Mouthguards are only valid when combined with frequent hand washing with a hydroalcoholic solution or soap and water.
  • If you need to wear a face mask, learn how to use it and remove it correctly.

How to put on, wear, take off and discard a face mask

Before putting on a face mask, wash your hands with an alcohol-based disinfectant or soap and water.

  • Cover your mouth and nose with your face mask and make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask.
  • Avoid touching the face mask while wearing it; If you do, wash your hands with an alcohol-based disinfectant or soap and water. Change your masks as soon as it’s wet and don’t reuse single-use masks.
  • To remove your mouthpiece: remove it from behind (do not touch the front of the mouthpiece); immediately dispose of it in a closed container and wash your hands with an alcohol-based disinfectant or soap and water.
