Irish woman named the first non-American global CEO of Special Olympics


Irish woman Mary Davis has been announced as the new global CEO of Special Olympics International. This is the first time a-non American has been in the position. 

Davis had previously worked as the CEO of Special Olympics Ireland as well as Managing Director of the Europe Eurasia branch of the organisation. She told RTÉ Radio One that the role was the role as “exciting and daunting”.

“Its phenomenal to see the growth of it. And now in the role of CEO… it’s bizarre to see… I would love to see another [Special Olympics] in Ireland.”

Davis previously ran in the 2011 Presidential election and also brought the Special Olympics to Ireland in 2003. She first got involved with the Special Olympics when she was a teacher in 1978 in Dublin.
