2016 is the year for the Irish motor industry with sales up 28pc on last year. New car buying slowed a little last month but was still up 14pc on last year, new official figures show.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) statistics reveal that registrations were up 14pc (21,597) compared with March 2015 (18,933). Registrations for the year to date (82,882) are a significant 28pc up on the first quarter for 2015 (64,519).

The top-selling makes so far this year are:

1) Toyota

2) Hyundai

It is predicted that the 2016 year will see up to 165,000 new registrations on the road. Some would say the Celtic tiger is back and back with a bang.
