Ireland miss out on spot in Eurovision finals

It’s been 20 years since Ireland last claimed victory in the Eurovision and after last night we will be another year away from coming close to finding that day of glory again.

Formor Westlife member Nicky Byrne failed to make it through to the finals of the song contest. Last nights semi final took place in Stockholm but Byrne failed to take on of the ten available places in Saturday’s final.

Byrne’s track, Sunlight, was co-written with Wayne Hector (who has written for Britney Spears, amongst others) and composer Ronan Hardiman (whose credits include the soundtrack to Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance).

Here are the ten who made it through on the night;

  • Latvia
  • Georgia
  • Bulgaria
  • Ukraine
  • Serbia
  • Poland
  • Israel
  • Lithuania
  • Belgium
  • Australia

They join the ten finalists who went through from Tuesday’s heat. Sweden, who are hosting, are also automatically through.

Ireland have now failed to make it out of the weeknight heats three years in a row. It’s not all bad new for Byrne who did receive a lot of praise online from fans. He tweeted last night to thank everyone for the support saying;

Amazing Time Amazing Support. I gave it my all, I’m sorry I didn’t get us there. I pass on the torch to someone else now next year. Nick.
