Rovers make the long trek to Donegal for a meeting with Finn Harps in Ballybofey tonight after a promising beginning to their season.
Following their 2-0 win over Wexford Youths on Friday night they have maximum points from their first two games and are yet to concede a goal.
Rovers were made to work hard for their win on Friday night with the visitors doing well in the first half before goals from Danny North and a late Gary McCabe penalty sealed all three points.
Once again they will be without Stephen McPhail and Luke Byrne but both are expected to be back for Friday’s home game with St Pats. Killian Brennan and Dean Clarke are doubtful after both had to come off with injuries on Friday night.
This is first meeting of the two sides since the final game of the 2008 Premier Division season which Harps won 2-0 at Finn Park. In spite of that win the Donegal side were relegated that season and have spent the intervening years in the First Division.
Even though it’s only a few games into the season Harps are already facing an injury crisis with some of their first choice players being ruled out for long spells. In their opening night 2-1 victory over Derry City midfielders Sean Houston and Barry Molloy picked up serious injuries which it’s feared may keep them sidelined longterm. Their rotten luck continued in Friday nights 3-0 defeat away to Dundalk when left-back Ciaran Coll was stretchered off in the latter stages with a bad knee injury.
One man who probably will be playing for Finn Harps is ex Rovers keeper Richard Brush who joined from Sligo in January. “Brushie” of course had two spells with The Hoops, the first of which saw him win a league championship medal and play in the clubs historic Europa League campaign in 2011.
The home side played the very first game in their history as a senior club against Shamrock Rovers in August 1969 and will be hoping they don’t have a repeat of the scoreline as The Hoops ran out 10-2 winners that day!
Kick off in Finn Park tonight is 8pm and tickets are available at the gate.
