Election averted as Fitzgerald falls on her sword

Frances Fitzgerald told Cabinet colleagues she was resigning to prevent the country being forced into a snap general election.

Announcing her resignation this morning, the Dublin Mid-West TD was keen to point out she wasn’t forced to hand in her resignation and said she was doing it for the good of the country.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said he accepted the resignation but did not believe it was the “right thing”.

Her resignation comes ahead of a Fianna Fáil motion of no confidence, which was due to be debated in the Dáil at 8pm.

Taoiseach Leo Varakdar has written to Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin confirming that Ms Fitzgerald has offered her resignation and that he has accepted it.
