The Humanist Association of Ireland, Equality and Rights Alliance and UL Medical Students for Choice are just three of the 10 organisations who have recently joined the Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment.
They join a growing alliance of 65 organisations including the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, Lawyers for Choice, One Family and Terminations for Medical Reasons Ireland, who are working together to raise awareness of the urgent need for a referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment.
Welcoming the new members, Ailbhe Smyth, Convenor of the Coalition, said:
“The Coalition to Repeal the 8thAmendment is now the largest ever civil society grouping in Ireland working to achieve constitutional change on this issue.
“Our 65 members range from human rights, feminist and pro-choice organisations to trade unions, NGOs and community groups.
“Combined, we represent 1.5 million members nationwide, which is over one-third of the entire population of the State.
“The diversity and reach of our membership is indicative of the real appetite that exists for repealing the Eighth Amendment.
“For over two years, polls have consistently shown that the majority of people in Ireland support repeal of the Eighth Amendment.
“We’re saying that women deserve better and Ireland can do much better. The Coalitionwill lead that call for change because this issue can no longer be painted over.”
