The Cabinet is currently meeting in a last ditch attempt to try and avoid a pre Christmas General Election.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin will also meet later this morning as pressure grows on Tanaiste Frances Fitzgerald to resign.
The Tánaiste has some serious questions to face from her own party at this mornings meeting following revelations last night that she had received three emails, on two separate dates, notifying her of the legal strategy pursued by former Garda commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan against whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe.
The Department of Justice emails reveal that back in 2015 Fitzgerald was told repeatedly about an “aggressive” approach to undermine Maurice McCabe at the O’Higgins commission which examined allegations of Garda malpractice.
The emails have only increased the tension between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil in regard to calls for the Tanaiste to resign.
The meeting comes ahead of a Fianna Fáil motion of no confidence in Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald, which will be debated in the Dáil at 8pm.
