Shamrock Rovers claimed the inaugural SSE Airtricity National U-17 title with a 3-2 win over St Patrick’s Athletic in an exciting game at Tallaght Stadium last night.
The first half was especially spectacular after Pats took the lead three minutes into the game. Rovers hit back in the 10th minute when Darren Quinn finished from close range.
Parity didn’t last long however as Pats regained the lead a minute later when Martin raced clear of the young Hoops back four and clinically beat Rovers keeper Gleeson.
Once again Rovers showed the spirit that has been in abundance all season as they fought back in fine style.
They equalised in the 37th minute when a Shane Stokes corner when straight into the back of the Pats net and they took the lead right at the end of the first half when Sean Callan helped divert Richie English’s free kick past the Pats keeper Martin.
Callan’s goal turned out to be the winner as the second half was scoreless.
The young Hoops and their management team of Aidan Price and Graham Gartland deserve great credit for what they achieved in the short time since they got together in the summer. To win the inaugural Under 17 title is a great feat and something they all should be very proud of. Hopefully it’s the first of many titles the lads will win for Shamrock Rovers.
